WE ARE A CREATIVE AGENCY WITH HEART.

YES. WE SAID HEART. WE WORK WITH ORGANIZATIONS WHOSE MISSIONS LIGHT US UP. SOME PEOPLE SCOFF AND CALL US A BUNCH OF NUTTY IDEALISTS. WE PREFER “GUTSY SOBs”.

From day one in mom’s basement with a coffee table desk, our mission has been to do business differently. To use our talents for good not evil. And to use Flipside as a vehicle for do-gooding. So we do just that.

We are a Certified B Corporation

We are a part of a global movement of corporations with heart who have committed to creating a better way to do business. Inc. Magazine calls B Corps the highest standard in socially responsible business.” We’ve decided to use our company as a force for good.

WE ARE OFFICE-LESS – BY CHOICE! (SERIOUSLY)

On May 1, 2015 our team boldly, defiantly, and perhaps crazily embarked on what we like to call The Office Shmoffice Experiment – a 365-day pursuit of an unapologetically different and joyfully disruptive way of doing business. We’re not “remote workers”. Lame. No, we’re all working together, living life to the fullest, and choosing to let our office be where the work gets done the best.

Follow our journey on our blog. It’s a hoot.

WE GIVE BACK.

We feel fairly blessed to have talent and people who want to pay us to come up with ideas all day. So we give our talent whenever we can.

WE RUN THE GREAT SANDWICH MAKE.

The Great Sandwich Make is our rogue charitable initiative. We call up all the people we know and lots that we don’t know, and make healthy, delicious, and nutritious kits for the less fortunate in Vancouver’s Downtown East Side. In 2015, we made and delivered 902 kits with 1000 healthy homemade sandwiches, juice, treats, chips, nuts, snacks, toiletries, socks, gloves, deodorants, toothbrushes, and a “You Matter” note. Every year, we are humbled by the experience. To get involved in our next event, email Natalia.

RAINCITY HOUSING IS OUR HEART.

We donate up to 20% of our team’s time and talent to RainCity Housing & Support Society because we believe that they are making a substantial difference in our community. Their mandate is to create a home for every person. They do this by operating shelters and transitional housing for those experiencing homelessness, addiction, and mental illness in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. They do this with love, sensitivity, positivity, innovation, guts, and very little glory. We think they’re the nicest.

WE ARE A SOCIAL GOOD DESIGN AWARD WINNER.

Every year, the Association of Registered Graphic Designers (RGD) invites submissions of graphic design projects done under the theme of communication design for social good; work with the power to incite action and make meaningful change in the way we live our lives. In 2014, we won a Social Good Design Award for our work with BC Parks on the Golden Spruce Trail signage. We are so proud.

Kim is our Chief Creative Renegade

Her brain never stops. Ever. She is a creative addict who loves to strategize, write, create, and give back. Her vision has always been simple and she makes no apologies for it: To do great work for good people. No jerks. She fired the last accountant who told her that charitable work would get her nowhere fast. “He has no balls,” she said.

With green juice in one hand, a whiteboard marker in the other, and a  backpack full of Vega bars, Kim leads the team to wild and wonderful creative places that leave our clients in awe and their customers wanting more.

Mike is Director of Project Love

Mike is a laser-focused problem-solver with a penchant for sublime organization (and pie). When we found out that his closet is colour-coded (legit!), we knew we'd found our man. There isn't a mess he can't clean up nor a marketing challenge he can't solve.

When he's not running projects like grace under fire, Mike traipses through trails with his four-legged sidekick Zeus and sips on martinis. Not necessarily at the same time. But sometimes. He's all heart, lotsa soul, and all kinds of smart. He also has an enviable shoe collection.

Miranda is Lead Creative Renegade

Miranda looks at design as an opportunity to tell a story. Whether she’s whipping up a killer business card or a full-blown marketing campaign, she always asks herself “Is this an effective communication tool.” She doesn’t rest her keen creative eye until the answer is a resounding “Yes!”

She has an affinity for typesetting and for cats. She’s supercool so we try not to judge her for the latter.

Leah is our Chief Optimization Renegade

Leah is an online marketing genius ripe with fresh strategies, a wizard-like approach to content, a ceritification in optimization (the girl put in some SERIOUS hours), and an insatiable mind. She has a proven track record of re-engineering lacklustre websites into revenue-generating machines. Bam! Leah is hilarious, honest, and wicked smart.

She's a digital and content know-it-all (in a non-annoying way) and she builds engagement campaigns on multiple channels that turn likes into dollars. She “gets” the wild, woolly online world and reins it in to map client success.

Natalia is Administrative Assistant

She is an über-fan of notebooks and bulleted lists with blue checkmarks. She dots Is and crosses Ts like a boss (and with a smile!). Natalia juggles all of the day-to-day to-dos like they're precious diamonds.

When she's not checking off to-do list items, Natalia goes gleefully to her second job: Super mom to "The Flipside Baby"! (We take credit because that sweet muffin was conceived on our watch in 2014. Well, not literally. We think.)

Nataal is a Creative Renegade

She is pure creative genius bottled up in a temple of cool. Nataal is a creative chameleon who can pull off any style – pretty, ornate, corporate, ballsy, wacky, reserved, bold. She knows how to read a client and create work that blows them away and propels their business forward.

Nataal is also a gifted photographer, a fashionista (without the ego), and one of the coolest people we know. Sometimes, we think we’re not worthy.

Connect with Nataal:

Lucy is a Creative Renegade

Lucy is scads of creative versatility jam-packed in a sweet British-accented package. She has HUGE talent and all kinds of humour. Lucy is a graphic designer whose heart patters for beautiful photography, gorgeous textiles, and pancakes en masse.

Lucy builds community wherever she goes. She leads with kindness and a cuppa joe, travels extensively, and is the kinda girl you can call at 3 in the morning – to cry, party, work, or play. She amazes us.

Juli is The Suit

She has four kids and can do headstands, so she’s obviously a natural at juggling projects, meeting deadlines, wowing clients, and making the utterly impossible totally possible.

Juli works out of her home in Allen, Texas with our clients south of the border. If you ask her nicely, she’ll give you a little southern twang.

Connect with Juli:

Harley is our Resident Bitch

She is the real boss around here. She keeps the team in line, the mailman at bay, and the studio smelling ripe. She spends her days in equal thirds: Sleep, bark, fart. She is very good at her job – and excels at the latter consistently.

She responds favourably to pig ears, biscuits, and belly rubs. And unapologetically admits that her love can be bought.

WE STARTED THIS BUSINESS IN 2006 WITH ONE FIRM CONVICTION:

ELEVATE COMPANIES WITH HEART.

So we drew a line in the sand. Actually, we drew it in cement. We only do work for companies that we truly believe are run by nice people, that are doing good things in the world, in our community, and in their offices, and that are exceedingly kind and honest in their business dealings. As a result, we have the distinct pleasure of using our talents for good not evil every day. Which is pretty cool. Working with nice people helps us continue our quest to be nicer too. We’re a B Corporation. We give back like it’s a religion. We never hire jerks. And we always welcome pop-bys – because meeting strangers is fun and nobody pops by any more. Bring juice.

POP BY

We don’t have an office (by choice). Read about our Office Shmoffice experiment here. That said, we love pop bys. Our team hangs out together in miscellaneous places on Wednesdays. We’d love for you to visit. Open invitation. Check out @FlipsideCreates every Wednesday to find out where we’re working, laughing, creating, and collaborating. See you there!
